How do you decide how to start your story?
There he sat. The organ grinder. asked:
Like, how do you decide where you want your story to start? Because of course there was things going on before in your characters lives, since most authors don’t begin their stories with the main characters birth, but the author usually just starts at one point, and then has the character have flashbacks or memories to what happened before the story started.

I’m not sure if everyone is going to understand what I’m trying to say, lol. And please don’t tell me to start writing, because I just want to know how YOU decide how to start your story. Thank you.

I just choose a day that’s really important in the main character’s life and go from there. Most of my main characters are school-age, so I’ll usually have them go to school, talk a little bit about the first two periods of the day (establish friends, personality traits, etc.), and then really focus on the giant monster that ripped off the roof of the school during lunch and how my main character destroyed it in front of 600-odd people.
Hope this helps! xD
Well, all of my stories have come from dreams that keep playing further the more i have them so where ever my dream starts off, that’s where my story scene does.
Sometimes, it helps to listen to music and play your story in your head like a film. then after just a few minutes of letting your mind roam, you’ll know where to begin.
=)
hope this helped a little
The novel I am writing at the moment I had planned to start it with an action scene. I wanted to let the readers think, what’s going on?
Then I have it going straight back to a memorable day. I take it back because I want the reader to think how does it go from that to this and back again to that.
Sorry if I don’t make sense,lol.
Basically, I want to keep the readers thinking and WANTING to read on.
Hope I helped x
Always start with the action. I started with a flashback, but it was still action.
Start it as close as possible to where the turning point for your character is, don’t drag it out.
