Go read the story in the Bible or the Gospels or wherever it is. Take notes. What are the main events in the story? Are there any lines you want a character to quote?
If you have time, get a copy of Godspell from the library or video rental place and watch for the part where they re-enact the prodigal sun story. It will show you a very different retelling of the story. Then you can feel free to be creative in writing your script, but you’ll know what needs to be in it so it’s true to the original story.
